UNESCO/IOCAFRICA MSP programme is working with 8 member states through the "2020 Regional and global development actions in support of Ocean Literacy for all and the Joint Roadmap on Marine Spatial Planning processes worldwide in the context of the UN Decade of ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development", co-financed by the Government Offices of Sweden. The project will entail:
- Experts meetings on environmental pressures, cumulative impacts and tools to support decision-making; focusing on Kenya and Mozambique.
- Training on marine spatial planning and sustainable blue economy, including transboundary aspects and opportunities. The beneficiaries will include Madagascar, Somalia, Mauritius and Tanzania
- A week of activities (4 or 5 events) on Transboundary MSP and Sustainable Blue Economy in SIDS (Cape Verde and Mauritius), including open day with maritime stakeholders, inter-institutional meeting with public authorities, and youth events in primary and secondary schools. This activity will be held in both in Cape Verde and Mauritius.
- KENYA (Workshops will be virtual and are organized with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute - KMFRI):
- Workshop from 14-15 October 2020 on environmental pressures, cumulative impacts and tools to support decision-making for Blue Economy development in Kenya.
- Workshop from 21-22 October 2020 on Marine Spatial Planning process for the Kenyan EEZ and nearshore waters.
- MADAGASCAR: National workshop on marine spatial planning and blue economy – organized virtually on 20 October and 23 October 2020, with the Direction de la Mer et de l'Economie Bleue, Ministère de l'Agriculture, de l'Elevage et de la Pêche.
- MAURITIUS: National workshop on marine spatial planning, organized face-to-face with the Department of Continental Shelf, Maritime Zones Administration and Exploration, Prime Minister’s Office on 20 October 2020.
- SOMALIA: National workshop on marine spatial planning, organized face-to-face with the Ministry of fisheries and Marine Resources, Federal Government of Somalia in the first half of 2021
- TANZANIA: National workshop on marine spatial planning and sustainable blue economy organized with the UNESCO Office in Dar es Salaam face-to-face on 20 and 21 October 2020 in Dodoma.
There will be a regional workshop towards the end of November 2020 where the results from the national workshops will be presented.
