Hi All:

I hope that you are doing well.

This email came across my desk yesterday - there is a new training opportunity for people to learn to use R to analyze and interpret Argo data.

If you know of people who may be interested, there is a link below that they can click on to register.

I’m sorry for the short deadline - registration closes tomorrow, March 23.

Kind regards,
Jen

Good day, Jen and Kush.

First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Lana Shaya – I’m a Science Advisor at DFO and I work with Blair Greenan and Andrew Stewart to advance work related to the Commonwealth Blue Charter Initiative.

One of the things DFO has been working on is the development of a workshop to allow individuals to learn how to analyze oceanographic data, using free and easy to use R based packages (Please see the email below and the attached outline and flyer for more detail).

We welcome you and your network to register for the workshop. Note that space is limited for this course and we are prioritizing the participation of Commonwealth Small Island Developing States and members of the Blue Charter Ocean Observation Action Group, but we are also looking to survey interest to see if there is enough demand to warrant additional sessions in the future to accommodate others that were not able to join the current dates.

Subject: NEW: Commonwealth Blue Charter Training Course: Using R to analyse and interpret ocean observational data

Dear colleagues,
I hope this email finds you well.
Following the success of the virtual Blue Charter training courses over the past year, we are now pleased to offer a new training course on the topic of ‘Using R to analyse and interpret ocean observational data’. This training course is developed and delivered by the Commonwealth Blue Charter Champion of the Ocean Observation Action Group (Canada) for those with an interest in learning how to analyse and transform publicly available oceanographic data into information for various applications.
A basic understanding of R is required for this course. (R is an open-source computer language commonly used in environmental and statistical analyses.)
This virtual training course is spread over two half days and is designed for those with an interest in learning how to analyse oceanographic data from global data sets. It will provide 1) a brief overview of the importance of oceanographic data and the research questions they can inform; and 2) training on how to use available tools to address barriers of accessing and analysing oceanographic data using R, a free interactive coding software. Using real-life examples, the training offers hands-on experience for participants to use the R packages ‘oce’ and ‘argoFloats’ to easily analyse oceanographic data from various source and instruments, including Argo. This training aims to provide participants with the skills necessary to answer specific questions relevant to their research or positions, as well as a brief demonstration of the importance of oceanographic data and the possible application in resource management.
For further details on the courses please visit https://training-bluecharter.thecommonwealth.org/course/oceanobsrand see the attached flyer.
This two, half day course (split into two 3-hour sessions) will take place twice to accommodate officials from different time zones:

  *   Offering 1 - 28 and 29 March 2022 (13:00 – 16:00 BST) GMT +1  You can see your local time here<https://bit.ly/3sVe0Qs>
  *   Offering 2 - 6 and 7 April 2022 (00:00 – 03:00 BST) GMT +1 You can see your local time here<https://bit.ly/34ruQNn>
Please complete the following survey to register your interest to attend this course: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/oceanobspretraining
Feel free to pass this information onto other Ministries, Departments or Research Institutes who have staff that may be interested in joining this course. Places for this course are limited and we would encourage you to register as soon as possible but no later than 23 March 2022. If you have any specific questions relating to the course, please email us at BlueCharter at commonwealth.int<mailto:BlueCharter at commonwealth.int>.
We look forward to your registrations and seeing you at this training course.
Kind regards,
Subaskar
