Background

The General Assembly of the United Nations will convene a high-level Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development (the Ocean Conference), from 27 June to 1 July 2022, in Lisbon, Portugal.  More information about the Ocean Conference, including modalities, background documents and a FAQ, is available on the Conference website at: https://www.un.org/en/conferences/ocean2022.

The Ocean Conference is co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, and it comes at a critical time as the world is strengthening its efforts to mobilize, create and drive solutions to realize the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. It is expected to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions to start a new chapter of global ocean action. 

In accordance with General Assembly resolution 73/292, the Conference will also be open to relevant stakeholders whose work is relevant to the Conference and who are duly accredited to attend. The President of the General Assembly has appointed the Permanent Representatives of Denmark and Grenada to conclude the intergovernmental consultations on the outcome declaration of the Conference by May 2022.
