The lead authors were: Prof. Alexander Turra, University of São Paulo; Dr. Francois Galgani, IFREMER; and Dr. Peter Kershaw, Independent Consultant Norfolk, U.K.

Supporting authors were: Dr. Britta Denise Hardesty, CSIRO, Australia; Dr. Amy Lusher, Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA); and Dr. Peter Ryan, FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, South Africa.

Today is the first-ever International Day of Clean Air for blue skies which highlights that air pollution is now the greatest environmental threat to health, but it is preventable. We have the solutions and technology to change this. To improve our air quality we need everyone on board –from individuals to private companies to governments.

To avert future global threats, including pandemics, we must protect rights to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment upon which we all depend for our health and well being. A human rights-based approach to the COVID-19 crisis is also needed to address its unequal impacts on the poor, vulnerable and marginalized and its underlying drivers, including environmental degradation.
