Subject: Virtual Ocean Literacy Summit : 8 June

Virtual Ocean Literacy Summit
8 June
9 am - 12pm UTC

The IOC-UNESCO is organizing the first-ever Virtual Ocean Literacy Summit will be held on the occasion of World Oceans Day 2020 (June 8).

The Summit will celebrate the successes of the ocean literacy community worldwide and aims to achieve the following three objectives:

  * Present the need for shared responsibility, connectivity, and a global vision for the ocean.
  * Explore the role of OL as an essential tool for the transformation of scientific knowledge into action within the context of the Decade.
  * Inspire stakeholders, institutions, organizations, and individuals to join the global OL community and contribute to the achievement of its goals in the course of the Decade.

The event will commence with a keynote address that will set the scene by discussing the need for a global vision to drive positive actions towards ocean sustainability. This will be followed by three panels featuring high-level speakers from different backgrounds, namely government, civil society, philanthropy, science, art, music, sport, private sector, and media, which will convey some key messages and highlight the inspirational values the Ocean Literacy aims to bring forward. The summit will close with a final session that will invite all the participants to join the collective and transformative work of the Decade.

In parallel to the presentations and panel discussions, a series of videos will showcase existing OL initiatives and activities happening all around the world, and participants will be invited through the chats, live forums, and through social media to share ideas about their possible contribution to advance a common agenda.

The main foreseen output of this event is the creation of a wider Ocean Literacy community that is aware of the opportunities offered by the Decade and willing to contribute to the achievement of its goals.
