The Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME) is the largest GEF-supported LME project in Africa. It encompasses 16 countries from Guinea Bissau in the northwest coast of Africa to Angola in the southwest.
Countries sharing the Guinea LME: Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Congo, Dem. Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Togo
The mandates of the LME include:
- Preventing toxic waste dumping in the region.
- Encouraging the creation of MPAs and implementation of national policies on designated protected areas and other conservation measures
- Promoting adoption of cleaner technologies and waste minimization for industrial processes for reduction of waste/effluent discharge.
- Operating the Interim Guinea Current Commission, and later Guinea Current Commission, consistent with UNCLOS and within the framework of the Abidjan Convention
